Strecon A/S is a partner in the transfer research project "Application-specific adjustment of residual stresses during cold extrusion" lead by the Institute for Production Engineering and Management of the Technical University Darmstadt. Together with Hirschvogel Umformtechnik GmbH, Strecon is supporting the project to enable an active control of residual stresses of formed parts by using tooling-based approaches to control the forming process.
Two approaches are researched in the project: 1) To apply an active counterforce during the extrusion process, 2) To change the die diameter during the ejection phase by means of an actively adapting reinforcement system. Strecon is especially contributing to the second approach with our knowledge regarding prestressing systems. The design of an acitvely changing prestress allows for a controlled change of the outer pressure on the die and thereby of its inner diameter. In addition to the project's aim to control residual stresses, this technology has potential for other applications like reducing ejection forces.
